First arose in the southwest of Mecklenburg Schwerin south of the castle. Then the park. To the system around a city system with Castle Church, homes and streets. The baroque castle Ludwigslust, built from 1772 to 1776, soon acquired the nickname "Mecklenburg's Versailles" or "Small Sanssouci of the North". The accompanying 120-acre Castle Park is the largest park in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The entire ensemble of castle, park and late baroque town layout is unique in northern Germany in this way.

Beginning of the 18th century Duke Christian II. Ludwig von Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1683-1756) settled near the village of Klenow first build a hunting lodge. In his honor, was christened the place in 1754 "Ludwig Lust" to. His son and successor, Duke Friedrich (1717-1785), moved in the following years, even Schwerin's main residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg there. And he drew near the hunting castle high a new building.

Architectural highlight of the new three-storey castle Ludwigslust designed by the court architect Johann Joachim Busch (1720-1802) was the "Golden Hall". Full regal rococo decor to extend the upper middle section on two levels.

But the splendor holds a curious secret. All the decoration of the hall is made of paper mache. Middle of the 18th century had (around 1739-1809) Duke Friedrich presents the new material the footman Johann Georg Bachmann. The material made it possible to design decorations for rooms that looked like the real thing but cost very little. Thus, the cost-conscious Duke commissioned the paper mache inventor with the production of moldings, rosettes, statues and busts. Splendor of cardboard: a swift move, because of the removal of the "Ludwigsluster Carton" can not be seen.
