Cathedral Basilica of Saint-Denis, designed by Abbot Suger in the twelfth century and completed in the thirteenth century and restored by Viollet-Leduc in the nineteenth century, Is both parish church, episcopal seat and a major cultural center.
It is the first monumental masterpiece of Gothic architecture, with its stained glass windows of the twelfth and nineteenth centuries, his royal necropolis and its unique collection of over 70 effigies and sculpted tombs. It is the burial place of the kings of France since the Robertians and direct Capetians, and several Merovingian and Carolingian kings chose to rest there before them.
