The 7th World Water Forum, the world’s largest gathering concerning water, will be held in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, Republic of Korea from April 12 to 17 this year. Water is a major global issue. Some one billion people in the world (about one out of every seven) face serious water shortages. According to `State of the Future` published by the United Nations in 2011, half of the world`s population could suffer water shortages by 2025 if the situation is left unresolved.

Korea is no exception: It is one of the countries that already have a high level of water stress. Water challenges, including shortages, water pollution, and flood damage, are becoming increasingly serious, and they are not limited to only a few regions or water specialists. The World Water Council organized the first World Water Forum in 1997 to promote global awareness of the severity of water issues and to seek and develop joint solutions. Since then, the forum has been held every three years near every World Water Day (March 22), and it is attended by heads of state, academics, representatives of businesses and civic groups, and members of the general public from all around the world.

The 7th World Water Forum will focus on various global challenges concerning water and measures to address them under the theme “Water for Our Future.” There will be discussion on possible solutions for water issues, particularly in Asian regions that have frequently suffered flood damage and water shortages in recent years. The Forum will include four main program processes: Thematic, Regional, Political, and Science & Technology. Among the four, Science & Technology is a newly introduced process proposed by Korea. Its objective is to offer substantive assistance to countries suffering water shortages, specifically by sharing scientific and technological know-how. To promote broad understanding of water issues, the Forum will also provide a venue for various events in which the general public can participate, such as a civic forum, expo, and fair. We hope that Korea can establish itself as a global leader in water-related industries through the 7th World Water Forum, which will be attended by stakeholders from more than 170 countries. Korea could not only set the future course for addressing global water challenges but also showcase its technology and know-how concerning water management.
