The Cats stamp issue introduces five cute and well-cared-for cats of varying coat lengths, colourings and personalities: Charo, Bubu, Sweetie, Cato and Briony. They span the four categories of cats used by many national and state cat associations in Australia.
The first social cat club in Australia was founded in Victoria, in 1919. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy was the first national cat association, also set up in Victoria in 1928. It was only the third such group in existence globally at the time, reflecting a significant national interest in cats.
Even today, cats are the second-most popular pet in Australia. By far the most common type of pet cat is the domestic shorthair, like our handsome ginger moggie, Bubu.
Briony is an Australian Mist, the only cat breed wholly originated in Australia.
