50 years ago, on 12 May 1965 the Federal Republic of Germany and Israel established diplomatic relations and agreed to exchange ambassadors. In light of the unspeakable German crimes during the period of Nazism, the Holocaust of six million Jews, denote both countries their relationships as "unique".
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations to have the contacts in science, culture and sport, at the Volunteer services, in schools and town twinning and other friendship organizations gradually intensified. A Community trade mark with Israel honors the occasion. A milestone in German-Israeli relations is the state visit of Chancellor Willy Brandt in Israel from 7 - 11th June 1973. Brandt is the first German head of government who is paying an official visit to Israel. The Goethe Institute opened in Tel Aviv in 1979. Together with the second, opened in 1988 in Jerusalem Goethe-Institut it promotes cultural exchange. As a historical turning point in the relationship between the two peoples of Israel called President Chaim Herzog state visit Richard von Weizsäcker in October 1985, the first visit by a German head of state.
