Kiwi Kitchen

As it is with many countries around the world, the pride of many Kiwi homes is the kitchen, and the easiest way to a Kiwi’s heart is through their stomach. New Zealand is home to loads of weird and wonderful recipes that combine simple, but flavoursome ingredients to create home and party staples that can only be described as quintessentially Kiwi.

Who would’ve thought that an afternoon tea favourite would be asparagus wrapped in buttered bread? Or that kids’ parties would be incomplete without fairy bread? Every good Southlander is practically raised on Southland cheese rolls, and we all know that the pavlova is definitely a Kiwi invention (just don’t ask any Aussies in the room for fear of restarting the ‘Great Pavlova Debate’).

Whether they’re from the iconic Edmonds Cookery Book or passed down through families there’s bound to be a dish on this quirky stamp sheet that every Kiwi can relate to.

18 classic Kiwi dishes on one stamp sheet
Brought to life by New Zealand artist Jason Kelly, this kitschy stamp issue combines well known Kiwi dishes with Kelly’s signature humour. Each stamp was originally painted on a wooden panel, and together they make a unique sheet of 18 stamps. 

Mouse Traps
These yummy cheesy treats are easy to make and adored by Kiwis. You just need toast bread, butter, your preferred yeast-based spread (Marmite, Vegemite or Promite) and some grated cheese. Heat your oven to 160°C, lightly butter each slice of bread, spread with a thin layer of Vegemite, Marmite or Promite and evenly sprinkle the cheese over the bread. Arrange the bread on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until the bread is crispy.

Kiwi Onion Dip
A favourite at parties, this simple dip is sure to be a crowd pleaser. To make, just get a 250g can of reduced cream, a sachet of onion soup mix and add one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice or vinegar. Put all ingredients together in a bowl and mix well to combine. Chill in the fridge for half an hour to an hour, then serve with sliced vegetables and/or potato chips.

Fairy Bread
A staple of kids parties (and kids-at-hearts’ parties), fairy bread is a simple, sweet treat. All you need is bread, butter and sprinkles. Butter the bread and liberally apply sprinkles. You can add your sprinkles the clean way or the messy way - for less mess, pour the sprinkles onto a plate and place the slices of bread butter-side down on the plate to coat them. If you enjoy living messily (and dangerously), take your sprinkles and pour liberally over your slices of bread (butter-side up).
