This stamp is being issued on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Heart Foundation in Jury’s Hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin, in 1966. The stamp was designed by Ger Garland and features an image of a heart over a cardiograph of a regular heartbeat.

The work of the Irish Heart Foundation is as important today as it has always been: Despite medical advances cardiovascular disease is still the biggest cause of early death in Ireland. Each year approximately 10,000 people die from coronary heart disease, stroke and other circulatory diseases. Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Ireland, accounting for 32% of all deaths. The largest number of these deaths relate mainly to heart attack at 5,000.
