Canada 2016
Hydrangeas

COUNTRY: CANADA
ISSUE DATE: 1 March 2016
STAMP SIZE: 26 x 32 mm
STAMP ILLUSTRATOR: Marie-Élaine Cusson
STAMP DESIGN: Sputnik Design Partners Inc.

The two species featured on this year’s stamps are selections of bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) and the smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea aborescens). Endless Summer, shown here in pink, is a cultivar of the bigleaf species, while Annabelle, with its snow-white flowers, is a selection of the smooth species.

Native to eastern Asia, bigleaf hydrangeas will also produce blue or lavender flowers, depending on soil acidity or alkalinity. Smooth hydrangea is native to the United States.

Popular as ornamental shrubs thanks to their large, plentiful heads of flowers, hydrangeas are easy to grow. They thrive in full sun and moderate shade and do not require abundant moisture. Annabelle is one of the most cold-hardy hydrangeas. Hydrangea’s have sparked the public’s interest thanks to the introduction of new and different cultivars from nurseries around the world.
