Valdivia, done in 1928 and 1929 was a scientific exedition to explore the Deep sea.

The official scientific staff consisted of the zoologist and expedition leader Carl Chun, the botanist Wilhelm Schimper , the oceanographers Gerhard Schott , the chemist Paul Schmidt, the zoologists Carl Apstein, Fritz Braem and Ernst Vanhoffen and the navigation officer of HAPAG Walter Sachse.

A ship was bought from Hamburg-Amerikanischen Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft HAPAG and given instruments to be able to perform scientific measurements.

The ship had travelled over 32.000 nautical miles. The expedition was very successful. The results were published in 24 volumes. It actually managed to find a large number of new animal forms, yet to investigate them on board the ship and to preserve them eventually. Knowing the deep-sea fauna has been significantly expanded.
