Malaysia 2016 - River Transportation in Sarawak

The river transport series was a way to educate stamp collectors in the country as well as preserving the national heritage through stamps issued by POS Malaysia.

Sarawak, nicknamed Bumi Kenyalang ("Land of the hornbills"), is one of the two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo.

The river transport in Sarawak was an important part of the lives of the people there. For centuries, the rivers of Sarawak have been a primary means of transport as well as a route for timber and other agricultural goods moving downriver for export at the country's major ports.



The river transport featured are the longboats (perahu panjang), express boats (bot ekspres) and the 'tambang' boats (bot tambang).

“The issuance of the river transportation series is part of our efforts in educating stamp collectors and the public on various types of transportation in Malaysia as well as preserve our heritage through our stamp collections,” said Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, Pos Malaysia’s group chief executive officer.


FIRST DAY COVER


“The existence of 55 navigable rivers in Sarawak means river transportation remains an integral component for its people to get from one place to another. Hence, I believe that avid collectors or beginners will find this issue interesting to add to their collection,” he said.

MINIATURE SHEET FIRST DAY COVER


In this series, the three stamps that will be issued are the Longboat (70 sen), Expressboat (80 sen) and Ferry Boat (90 sen) whereas the miniature sheet will feature the Raft (RM3.00).
