The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is one of the fifteen specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN). Its headquarters are in Paris.

UNESCO was established in response to the terrors of World War II that had just ended. Its main purpose was to contribute to peace by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights.

The organisation was established by the signature of the Constitution at the founding diplomatic conference in London on 16 November 1945. The Constitution came into force on 4 November 1946 with the deposit of the twentieth ratification by a member state. The founding member states were Australia, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, China, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, India, South Africa, Canada, Lebanon, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand, Greece, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Turkey, and the United States.
